Cryptotia in Babies: When the Top of the Ear Is Hidden Under the Skin
In cryptotia the upper part of a baby’s ear is partly buried under the scalp skin. Learn the signs and when early ear molding can help.

Cryptotia (hidden or buried ear) is an ear shape in which the upper part of the ear is partly tucked under the skin of the scalp. When you gently pull the top of the ear outward it appears, then slips back under the skin.
Short answer: Cryptotia does not usually correct itself. In newborns, early ear molding can draw the upper ear out and create a fold behind it; if it is not treated early, correction usually requires surgery.

The skin and muscles around the upper ear developed in a way that holds the cartilage under the scalp. It is seen more often in some populations, including East Asia.
Some mild folds caused by the baby’s position in the womb improve in the first days after birth. When the shape is still visible after the first week, it is less likely to correct itself, and waiting uses up the weeks when the cartilage is softest. An early examination lets the physician decide whether to watch or to start molding. More: do babies grow out of ear deformities?
Often, yes, if treatment starts early. The device holds the upper ear out from the head so that a natural groove forms behind it. Because cryptotia also involves the skin, the physician decides whether molding alone is likely to be enough.
Molding works best when it starts early, because the cartilage firms in the first weeks of life:
These are average planning guides; the treating physician sets the exact course.
Ear shape differences are usually cosmetic and do not affect hearing. Once the cartilage has firmed, the shape no longer responds to molding, and correction later in childhood usually means ear surgery (otoplasty). More: ear molding or otoplasty?
The CranioWell baby ear corrector set is applied and followed only by treating physicians. Find the nearest one in our specialist directory. If there is no physician near you, send us a photo of your baby’s ear and your location, and we will tell you what options are available.

When the upper ear is hidden, glasses and masks may not sit well later in life. This is one reason families choose early correction.
No. The device is soft and no needles, incisions or anesthesia are used. Some babies are briefly fussy while it is fitted and settle quickly.
