CranioWell Head Shape Correction Centre
Head Shape

The CranioWell head shape correction system was founded by Dr. Yaşar Hüseyin Onganlar, a specialist in Paediatrics. He has been serving patients in the field of infant health for many years.

In recent years his interest in ear deformities grew, and he began to observe more clearly that some babies with ear problems also had head shape irregularities.

With the aim of bringing a new approach to head shape correction in Turkey, we established a dedicated centre with an innovative system.

What Do We Do?

Accurate Information

As with everything, our first priority is to give families accurate information. We explain that head shape irregularities, except in very severe forms, are not related to intelligence, attention or development. We emphasise that the issue is usually a cosmetic concern. We share educational content about head shape deformities on craniowell.com and through our YouTube channel.

How Is the Diagnosis Made?

Once families or treating physicians identify that a baby's head shape appears asymmetric, the type and severity of the deformity is assessed — including deformational scaphocephaly, brachycephaly and dolichocephaly. To determine the degree of deformity, we use our 3D scanner at the centre to capture precise measurements of the baby's head shape within a few minutes.

Using established measurement scales, we determine the degree of asymmetry in the baby's head shape.

If the deformity is classified as severe or very severe, helmet therapy is recommended. For babies not requiring helmet therapy but at risk, we schedule follow-up appointments and provide the necessary guidance. Using our 3D scanner, the baby's head shape is uploaded to our software within a few minutes.

Treatment

Sometimes, babies show a tendency to turn their head constantly to one side due to torticollis or muscle weakness; in such cases we refer them for physiotherapy.

If helmet therapy is indicated for a baby and we cannot confidently expect spontaneous resolution, we proceed with helmet treatment.

We encourage families to consult with us about the helmet we have designed for their baby, and also to explore other helmet therapy providers available in the country. At a time when helmet prices can be significant, we want families to consider all available options.

Is Helmet Therapy Easy for Babies?

Baby helmet therapy is quite a demanding process. Although babies generally adapt to the helmet within 7–10 days, it does present certain challenges.

First of all, helmet therapy is never started in the first 3 months. A baby undergoing helmet treatment should wear the helmet for 23 hours a day.

In the early stages of helmet therapy, sweating and irritability may be observed. Helmet therapy is a dynamic process and the inner structure of the helmet must be adjusted at regular intervals.
