How to Correct Prominent Ears in Babies
Prominent ears in babies can be corrected non-surgically with ear molding in the first weeks of life. Learn how, when and who applies the CranioWell set.

Prominent ears (protruding ears) occur when the ear sticks out from the side of the head more than usual. The most common reason is that the natural fold of the antihelix — the inner cartilage ridge — has not formed fully, leaving the ear without the structure that normally holds it close to the head.
Short answer: In newborns and very young infants, prominent ears can be corrected non-surgically with ear molding. The CranioWell ear corrector set is applied by a physician in the first weeks of life while the cartilage is still soft. After about 3 months, the cartilage firms and molding is no longer effective; surgery (otoplasty) then becomes the option.
For a short period after birth, maternal hormones keep ear cartilage unusually flexible. During this window, a small physician-applied device can gently reshape the antihelix, training the cartilage to form the correct fold. As hormone levels fall in the first weeks, the cartilage becomes firmer. The earlier molding starts, the faster and more predictably the cartilage responds.
The CranioWell baby ear corrector set is fitted by a physician. The device gently holds the antihelix in the correct position while the cartilage is still soft. The physician monitors the ear at follow-up visits and removes the device once the cartilage has set in its new shape.

After about 3 months, ear cartilage has firmed enough that molding is no longer reliably effective. The main corrective option after this age is otoplasty (ear surgery), which is generally considered from around 5–6 years of age when the ear has reached close to its adult size.
The set is applied only by trained physicians — paediatricians, ENT specialists, family physicians and plastic surgeons. It is not a home kit. To find a physician near you: specialist directory. For international enquiries: contact us.
