Ear Molding Skin Care: What Parents Should Watch For
Ear Shaping

Ear molding is non-surgical, but the device sits on delicate newborn skin for several weeks. Simple daily care and knowing what to watch for keep treatment comfortable.

Short answer: The most common issue during ear molding is mild skin redness where the device touches the ear. Keep the area clean and dry, follow your physician’s instructions and contact them if redness does not fade, the skin breaks or there is discharge.

What is normal during ear molding?

  • Mild redness: light pink marks where the device touches, fading soon after pressure is relieved.
  • Brief fussiness: some babies are unsettled for a short time after fitting.
  • Normal routine: babies feed and sleep as usual.

When should I contact the physician?

  • Persistent redness: redness that does not fade.
  • Broken skin: a sore, blister or open area.
  • Discharge or smell: moisture, discharge or an unusual smell around the ear.
  • Loose device: the device has moved or come off.

How do I keep the area clean?

  1. Keep it dry: protect the ear during baths as your physician explains.
  2. Do not adjust: do not remove or reposition the device yourself unless instructed.
  3. Check daily: look at the visible skin around the ear once or twice a day.
  4. Attend follow-ups: the physician checks the skin and fit at each visit.
