Positional plagiocephaly is increasing in babies. Positional plagiocephaly is an asymmetric deformation of the skull due to various reasons;
- first birth
- assisted birth
- Multiple pregnancy
- prematurity
- Congenital muscular torticollis
Positional plagiocephaly can often be diagnosed clinically and by physical examination. The simplest way to assess the severity of plagiocephaly is to use a diagonal caliper, which measures the difference between diagonal lengths on each side of the head during a physical examination. Plagiocephaly can be treated surgically or conservatively. Positional plagiocephaly not accompanied by craniosynostosis is treated conservatively. Conservative treatments include a variety of treatments such as position change, physiotherapy, massage therapy and helmet therapy.
Systematic approaches to the clinical examination, diagnosis, and treatment of positional plagiocephaly may be necessary, and age-appropriate treatment is recommended for patients with positional plagiocephaly.
